“I Am Who They Were” Necklace by Artist Ashley Gilreath 2011. Read the history behind this amazing piece and see more photos at Ashley Gilreath here. Ms. Gilreath created this necklace by casting dollhouse frames in silver and bronze and printing family portraits directly onto microscope glass.

How would I make a “poor man’s copy” of this? By using  dollhouse frames/bezels and taken apart lockets (I could also make the frames by making a polymer clay mold). I would then print out photos on ink jet transparency paper (which I use all the time in my collages).

The Piano and the Pianist - Wynyard Quarter, Auckland

The public piano at the year-old Wynyard Quarter precinct is easily my favourite thing about the area.

Throughout the day, people can be found playing on it, all the while looking towards the marina and the Harbour Bridge. These would-be Mozarts can often be seen losing themselves in the moment, the privacy of being tucked away under the furthest silo emboldening them.

Unfortunately for the people of Auckland, the piano was vandalised earlier this year. Thugs kicked in its sides and tagged its beautiful wood. It was out of commission for some time, but the council cleaned it and fixed it up - undeterred by the stupidity of some people who just don’t want to have good things.

The girl in the photo was playing Mary Had a Little Lamb. It may not have been Beethoven, Mozart, or even Chopin - but as someone with no musical talent of my own, it was a beautiful thing to listen to none the less.
